Exine Translations

The works in Exine Translations come from studies of pollen grain surfaces. I find these studies in scientific atlases and microscopy illustrations. The observed textures and microscopic openings are then translated into my materials of wire, paper pulp and stitch.

The abstraction of pollen surfaces and the dramatic shift in scale draw forward a beauty that normally remains invisible to the naked eye. I work from wonder and from pollen’s role as a miraculous carrier of reproduction and dispersal. Pollen reaches beyond the individual organism; it ‘goes places’ and challenges notions of plants as sedentary and placid. Pollen surfaces and structures are sites of permeability, contact, and transformation.
