Root Structures

This work investigates how barley roots are structurally adapted to transport water and nutrients. In collaboration with Professor Helle Jacobe Martens (University of Copenhagen), I studied fluorescent microscopy images and learned about root anatomy and cellular organisation.

Inspired by this, I combined regimented grid forms—reflecting inner cellular function—with more irregular structures representing the outer cortex, exploring a visual contrast between control and looseness. While rooted in scientific imagery, the work is an interpretation shaped by my material and aesthetic choices.

I have a sustained interest in how cells arrange themselves in relation to one another—not only functionally, but also symbolically, in how they share their space. To me this hidden architecture beneath our feet is one of the many plant modalities that is good to ‘think with’. Especially now where we are undermining our plant support network and losing our more-than-human kin species at an alarming rate.
