Roots in Motion

My focus in this piece (2025) has been to reflect on—and honour—the impressive growth and movement I observe when I am cultivating wheat roots. The root weavings emerge through growing the plants in custom-built moulds shaped like plant cells. The strong directional movement of roots in these moulds suggests a kind of intentionality. A form of plant agency is felt when witnessing this growth.

In line with this, the paper pulp was made from pages of an old encyclopaedia, chosen to symbolically give plants more voice—linking our human knowledge systems with the embodied intelligence of plants.

Through this work, I hope to share an aspect of plant life by offering a material, textural experience that might evoke curiosity and perhaps even invite a deeper sense of connection with the plants. The plants that are ultimately the reason we are here today, to enjoy art and life on earth.

This piece is created to work in multiple orientation. Below shown at an exhibition at Gallery Møntergade 6, Copenhagen in 2025 – in a more horizontal placement.
