Using varied textile techniques, I have felted and wrapped strands of dead eelgrass around iron wire, using only a tiny amount of diluted school glue to facilitate adhesion. This work arose at a residency with Art56° at Ringkøbing Fjord in 2026, where large amounts of eelgrass were washed ashore. I marvelled at how it looked almost alive, as though it had intentionally wrapped itself around old fishing ropes, stones, and other objects on the shore.
Eelgrass is a material that was used in Denmark, on the island of Læsø, as part of roofs made of ‘seaweed’. Here, dead eelgrass was amassed on rooftops and compacted through a process akin to felting. Nowadays, the ecological status of eelgrass (Zostera marina) and its habitats in Danish coastal waters is under severe pressure and is generally considered unfavourable.
As you can see, I had fun accompanying these six individual sculptures back to the fjord and the North Sea.
